There are several flower parades in the world, but The Netherlands tops them all. Dutch bloemencorso's are the largest and the most spectacular ones.
The most beautiful, spectacular and crazy parades are made of dahlia's and take place in the months of August and September.
The childrengroups either have their own parade or are incorporated in the main parade. This cute object (named "The Flying Doctors") has been made by one of the many childrengroups in Lemelerveld.
There are at least 20 dahliacorso's in The Netherlands and the largest in the world is in the southern province of Noord-Brabant. In Zundert, the birthplace of Vincent van Gogh. Most of the others are held in the provinces of Overijssel, Gelderland en Drenthe.
You cannot see it from the picture, but this float is a very ingenious one. It is completely animated, everything is moving. The fishes look like they are actually swimming in the water.
When I first saw a dahlia parade, long time ago, I said about the makers: These people are crazy! Why? Because they are working almost a whole year on something that is completely useless. They are building enormous driving structures using thousands and thousands of dahlia flowers, resulting in a piece of art that lasts only one or two days!
It was in a period of the first gulf-war and a lot of other negativism which made many people depressed. Therefore I also said: This creativism, unity and hard work makes the world whole again. Because the only purpose of the flower parades is to make the people happy and let them enjoy these wonderful, colorful and spectacular floats.
And since then the builders have become even more creative, ingenious, inventive and tireless in designing and building the huge floats.
By the way: there are many more lovely parades in The Netherlands which are equally impressive. Like the Harvest Parade in Raalte (Overijssel), the Fruit Parade (Tiel, Gelderland), The Wool Parade, The Paper Parade and hundreds of other parades, including carnival parades.
P.S. I just watched the Lichtenvoorde 2016 dahlia parade on TV, and I must say that this corso is the number one parade in the world for sure! The floats evolve each year and have reached a dizzling high quality. All 18 floats are extremely ingeniously designed and built. There's a lot of technics and electronics involved now, some of the floats are driven by laptop computers and all of them are animated. It's unbelievable and I am wondering what will be the next step.
